Bethesda Softworks has released the first screenshots from Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, sequel to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, one of the most popular role-playing games ever made. As you can see below, the visual fidelity of the sequel has been improved beyond all expectations, and while this is to be expected in a sequel being released five years later, the improvements have only been made possible by Bethesda building a bespoke game engine, dubbed Creation.

With the power of Creation Bethesda has been able to integrate dynamic snow and rainfall, visual wind effects, self-shadowing, more realistic facial expressions, and smoother animations. Furthermore, distance-based terrain pop-in has been dramatically reduced, if not eliminated, and texture resolutions increased to make full use of the memory available on everyday graphics cards.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will hit shop shelves 11-11-11.
