NVIDIA to hold PC Workshops at Maker Faire

Launched in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2006, Maker Faire is family-friendly festival that celebrates invention, creativity and resourcefulness. "Part science fair, part county fair and part something entire new," the event will be held at San Mateo Event Center on the weekend of May 18 & 19 and NVIDIA is happy to announce that we'll be there.

Visit the NVIDIA booth at Maker Faire to meet with engineers from NVIDIA and the PC-modding community. Get hands-on instruction and all your questions answered on how to build, troubleshoot, optimize, and customize your own PC. Participants will also get a customized toolkit and can enter to win a powerful NVIDIA GeForce-powered PC!

Description of Workshops

Building Your Own PC - To get the most out of the session, you should be interested in building your own PC but have no previous experience.

In this talk, Kris Rey, Eric Chen, and Anthony Giurbino from NVIDIA will show you how to build or upgrade your PC. You’ll learn:

  • How to tell whether you should upgrade or buy a new PC
  • What PC components to buy and what each component does
  • How to assemble the PC from start to finish with hands-on experience
  • How to shop for the perfect upgrade to your current PC

 

PC Troubleshooting & Tips - This workshop is open to all.

In this talk, Anthony Santos, June Valencia, Tim Springer, and Micah Guimarin of NVIDIA will teach you how to troubleshoot and optimize your PC.  You’ll learn:

  • Four common issues if your PC doesn't boot
  • How to access and use the BIOS
  • How to test your GPU, CPU and RAM for stability
  • How to benchmark your PC
  • Maintaining your PC for optimal performance

 

Customizing Your PC: Case-Modding 101 - To get the most out of this session, you should have some previous experience with upgrading or building your PC.

In this hands-on workshop featuring Richard ‘DarthBeavis’ Surroz from Out of the Box Mods, you’ll learn:

  • How to sleeve power supply cables, including modifying existing cables and creating new ones from scratch
  • How good wire management can improve the PC's performance and also greatly improve the appearance
  • Tricks for effective wire management when building custom PCs

 

Optimizing Your Performance with NVIDIA GPU Boost - To get the most out of this session, you should be familiar with PC gaming.

In this talk, Tom Petersen of NVIDIA will introduce GPU Boost technology and show how to use third-party tools to interface with this clock-boosting technology to deliver faster game performance.  You’ll learn:

  • How GPUs work to draw graphics
  • What GPU Boost is and how it improves your PC’s performance
  • How can each gamer can get the most out of GPU Boost
