John Carmack: 'PCs Are Ten Times Faster Than Consoles'

August 6, 2011

By James Wang

In his annual address to his faithful fans at QuakeCon, John Carmack, co-founder and technical director of id Software, gave a 90 minute presentation of the state of Rage, id Tech 5, console development, and the growth of PC computing horsepower. In a past address, he estimated that PCs have become a million times faster since he started programming. Today, he revised that number to a billion. He said PCs are about ten times more powerful than consoles. This opens up all kinds of possibilities for future game engines including voxel and non-polygonal rendering.

Check out the full keynote video below, and as usual, Carmack's speech is highly technical and filled with cool, if not incomprehensible programming jargon.
