Rig Spotlight: Hex Gear R40 featuring GeForce GTX 980 Ti SLI

GeForce Garage, Hardware, Rig Spotlights

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti is designed to take on everything that’s next in gaming- 4K, VR, DX12- so it was only fitting that our first GeForce GTX 980 Ti Rig Spotlight feature a chassis from the future. We may know a few people, and with a few phone calls we secured a Hex Gear R40, a highly sought-after premium Micro ATX case that’s not yet available.

Better yet, R40 co-creator Hans Peder Sahl custom made a one-of-a-kind R40 with NVIDIA-inspired green acrylic just for us, in addition to designing and implementing a complete system build that utilized all available space and didn’t compromise on performance. There was just one problem: Hans Peder lives in Denmark, and our offices are in the United States.

With the build disassembled, the unique R40 and the many system components were shipped across the world, thankfully arriving intact. Instructions for assembly were included, but like a 50-piece Ikea flat pack it looked to be a daunting challenge to complete correctly. Thankfully, local lad James Walter had extensive knowledge of the R40, having consulted on prototypes, and is an expert modder and system builder to boot.

In the process of rebuilding Hans Peder’s R40 system, James applied his talents to rebadge the power supply with in-theme green text (see a tutorial here) and fill the loop with green dyed cooling fluid. The result is a theme-matched GeForce GTX green, black and silver system powered by two GeForce GTX 980 Tis operating in SLI, and a watercooled, heavily overclocked i7-4770K in a MATX case. The R40 is an exciting proposition for gamers wanting a small yet incredibly powerful system.
