A collective “what?!” rang out at Ubisoft’s E3 2011 press conference when Gearbox Software’s Brothers In Arms: Furious 4 was announced. Once a super-serious franchise filled with drama, Furious 4 throws all that hard work, regularly dedicated to the actions of those who participated in World War II, straight out the window, then jumps a few sharks before taking to the skies on the back of a flying pig. What are we talking about? Scroll down and watch the video.

As you can see, Furious 4 is going for brutal comedy rather than gritty realism, and what’s more, Furious 4 is fully playable online as a four-player co-op game. There’s even a “brutally fun” competitive multiplayer modes supporting up to ten players, and the character you use will be able to rank up and unlock new abilities and weapons.

To further detach the game from reality, the eponymous Furious 4 are chasing down Nazi uber-weaponry developed by Adolf Hitler’s crazy scientists, which if finished could turn the tide of war. Speaking of the 4, they are Chok, “a bloodthirsty Native American soldier;” Montana, “a giant fearless American warrior;” Stitch, “a psychopathic Irish medic;” and Crockett, “a fierce Texan fighter.”

Being a Gearbox game we have no doubt that Brothers In Arms: Furious 4 will be fun when it launches on PC and consoles in 2012, but we can’t help but feel that it should have launched as a new franchise instead of being connected to Brothers In Arms, if only because the Brothers In Arms franchise is associated with being super realistic, and so some may choose to skip Furious 4 because of that past association.
