E3 2011: Dead Island Gameplay Trailer Shuffles Into View

Dead Island’s haunting CG trailer set the Internet on fire earlier this year, and ruffled a few feathers, and now Techland, the game’s Polish developer, is ready to show in-game action following four years of development. Playable alone, or with three friends online, Dead Island places players into the flip-flops of ordinary holiday-goers enjoying their visit to the fictional Banoi, a tropical, independently-governed island that’s rapidly taken over by a mysterious zombie outbreak.

Played in first-person, Dead Island borrows RPG elements from any number of role-playing games, survival elements from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., co-op elements from Left 4 Dead, weapon crafting and melee combat elements from Dead Rising, and the tropical island setting of Crysis to create something unique, which is increasingly difficult given the ever increasing amount of zombie-themed games.

Not wanting to spoil the experience, publisher Deep Silver only offered those few details and the new trailer, available below, but did announce that customers who pre-order the game will receive a free $10 DLC add-on. Called Bloodbath, the downloadable content takes the form of an arena-based survival mode where players must fend off wave after wave of deadly zombies. Leaderboards will track player ability, and any items, including a new DLC weapon, can be transferred back across to the main campaign, along with any experience points earned.

Dead Island will terrorise shop shelves later this year.
