Gearbox Software has released five pretty images for their highly-anticipated shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines.
While the game will use the Unreal Engine 3, Gearbox has developed a proprietary renderer for the game called the "Red Ring engine." "It's exclusive to Marines," Gearbox President Randy Pitchford stated. "It's a real-time dynamic lighting, dynamic shadow system. When you see the images in this game you're going to realize how alive everything is. The way the lights move in the environment -- it affects everything in real-time. Nothing is baked in."
Some of the screenshots look really impressive and border on unreal (pun not intended), but we'll let you decide what's legit.
There's some nice fog, lighting, and fire effects here.
Once again the lighting looks pretty nice and are complimented well by the dynamic shadows.
The textures on the alien below look razor sharp and the muzzle flare from the gun nicely lights up the area.
If that's from the in-game engine, that looks really sweet.
Notice how the light nicely shines through the glass and reflects on the wall behind it.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Aliens: Colonial Marines is based off the Aliens mythology first established by the 1979 Ridley Scott film Alien. Colonial Marines, in particular, is heavily inspired by the action-heavy James Cameron-directed sequel Aliens.
A unique feature that separates Aliens: Colonial Marines from other shooters is that it's squad-based (allowing you to switch between soldiers) and doesn't feature a HUD.
Fans will be able to duke it out with the aliens when the game launches in Spring 2012.
