CD Projekt RED has announced version 2.0 of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Contained within a free downloadabe update that will release on September 29, the PC-exclusive Witcher 2 2.0 patch will include new technical enhancements along with a host of new gameplay modes and features.
The reveal was made in a Gamescom The Witcher 2 presentation. In the video below, CD Projekt RED Head of Production John Mamais stated that the update will include "over 20 new technical enhancements." Unfortunately, these specifications were not elaborated upon. However, The Witcher 2 was originally set to release as a DX11-enabled title; much like Crysis 2's post-launch DX11 update, this patch may very will do the same. If confirmed, this would make the game's beautiful RED engine look even better.
Along with whatever technical additions may come, the video revealed that a new tutorial system was underway. This would help new players better learn their combative skills and other gameplay mechanics, which was one of the few criticisms the critically-acclaimed title received.
While this will make the game easier in many ways, the video also revealed that the update will include a new "Dark Mode." According to the Polish developer, this mode will be almost as challenging as "Insane" (a mode where you die once and it's game over), but will allow players to save their game. In addition, Dark Mode will include new Dark items, which will be the most powerful items in the game. Furthermore, CD Projekt RED teased that this new mode will bring new dark themes and features to the game, which will make the game more replayable for veterans.
Another feature that The Witcher 2 2.0 will offer is the new Arena Mode. Here, players will fight wave upon wave of increasingly difficult enemies. Between each round, players will level and be able to purchase more powerful weapons. As the waves are infinite, players will ultimately die; the goal of the mode is therefore to compete for high scores. Players will be able to post their stats online either through their facebook accounts or on CD Projekt RED's official forums.
Finally, The Witcher 2 version 2.0 will include all nine previously released DLC for free.
While this generosity may seem extreme and almost unheard of, CD Projekt RED is no stranger to making PC gamers happy as they have previously given out free high-quality content to their loyal fan base (see The Witcher: Enhanced Edition).
Like the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher one, The Witcher 2 version 2.0 on the PC will be the definitive version to own.
