Compared to previous generations, Maxwell Architecture GeForce GTX 900M GPUs deliver up to 2x the performance and 2x the power efficiency. In gaming terms, Dark Souls II runs faster whilst consuming less power, and sees significant image improvements as demonstrated by our interactive comparison below.
Our example from Dark Souls II was created with the use of Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR), a new NVIDIA technology that delivers up to 4K-quality graphics on your notebook’s 1920x1080 screen. How it works is simple: using the extra performance of GeForce GTX 900M notebooks we render a higher-resolution picture on the GPU and scale the result back down to 1920x1080, applying a custom-made filter along the way to bolster fidelity. On your screen you see a more detailed picture with fewer jagged edges and artifacts, and a greater level of overall fidelity.
In Dark Souls II, our GeForce GTX 680M notebook played the game smoothly at 1920x1080, but on our new GeForce GTX 980M notebook we had ample performance to spare and so engaged DSR, upping the resolution to 3840x2160, giving us significantly more detailed graphics with considerably less aliasing. The Maxwell Architecture includes support for other new and innovative technologies, too. For the rendering of highly realistic game worlds with accurate lighting and shading we’ve developed Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI), in the process disproving moon landing conspiracies; and for faster frame rates we’ve created Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing (MFAA), a new anti-aliasing technique that’s quicker than, yet equally as good as MSAA.
Away from the wall socket, most gamers are disappointed with notebooks’ inability to play plug-free for any length of time. The solution: GeForce BatteryBoost. Originally introduced alongside GeForce GTX 800M notebooks, BatteryBoost has been much improved for the GTX 900M series, increasing on-battery performance and playability on most models, enabling you to enjoy your games at a smooth frame rate for longer when unplugged.
BatteryBoost automatically kicks in when you unplug your notebook, engaging a high efficiency mode with a frame rate cap (user tunable between 30-60 FPS). This prevents unnecessary power usage by forcing all components to only run as fast as is required, increasing your battery life without sacrificing a smooth frame rate or a high level of graphical fidelity.
New to BatteryBoost is the ability to choose individual graphics settings for when you are plugged in, and when you’re not. This is an optional feature that enables you to save even more battery life by lowering graphics settings that are applied only when unplugged. There is even an automatic Optimize For Battery button that will do this for you in one click. Of course, when you launch a game when plugged, it will continue to use your original, high-fidelity graphics settings, and like many GeForce features it’s all automatic.
GeForce Experience comes pre-installed on all GeForce GTX 900M notebooks, and also enables you to update drivers, capture gameplay footage with our critically acclaimed ShadowPlay recorder, and stream your PC games to SHIELD devices with GameStream technology. Note, version 220.127.116.11 or newer is required to use the new and improved GeForce BatteryBoost functionality.
