Goldeneye: Source Finally Out of Beta
By Jimmy Thang
Have you been waiting for that Goldeneye mod to come out of beta for what seems like an eternity? Well, the wait is over. With update 4.1, Goldeneye: Source has finally gone final.
For those unfamiliar with Goldeneye: Source, the first-person shooter is a Source engine mod that re-imagines the award-winning Goldeneye FPS from the Nintendo 64 (not to be confused with the more recent Goldeneye on the Wii).
Unlike the aforementioned Goldeneye titles, Goldeneye: Source’s sole focus is on combative multiplayer. In addition, while the levels and music are heavily inspired by its N64 counterpart, due to potential copyright infringements, they aren’t exactly the same. This is not to say the game strays away from the 1997 smash hit completely. Modes like Paintball and Golden Gun are still present. In addition, blood oozes down the screen in a similar fashion when killed, there’s a similar radar setup, and the aiming reticule looks nearly identical.
Visually, the character models used in the Goldeneye: Source look true to their real-life counterparts. For a mod, it’s pretty impressive how close “Boris” looks compared to actor Alan Cumming.
