Developer S2 Games has updated Heroes of Newerth to version 2.0. The game’s latest patch offers a number of tweaks and additions, including a new matchmaking system, improved interface, a new 3v3 map, map editor, a new hero, improved visuals and more.

Released in May earlier this year, Heroes of Newerth plays similarly to popular Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients. Like DotA, Heroes of Newerth is a team-based action real-time strategy game that reinforces tower defense-like gameplay. Because the game is relatively complicated to initially understand, S2 Games has included a new Casual Mode with the update; this mode, according to the developer, “lowers the barrier to entry for new and casual gamers.”

While the Casual Mode offers something to new players, S2 has also opted to include an in-game item shop. The item shop will incorporate microtransactions and will allow players to purchase things like hero skins, avatars and brand new announcer voices. While players will be able to spend real-world money to purchase these additions, currency towards these items can also be earned through matchmaking games.

You can download the new client for Heroes of Newerth on the game’s website.
