Ridge Racer Unbounded Announced

Seventeen years after its debut on the Playstation, the Ridge Racer franchise is finally making an appearance on personal computers. In development at Finnish studio Bugbear Entertainment, Ridge Racer Unbounded promises a different kind of racing experience, exemplified by its tagline, “Drive, Destroy, Dominate.”

Bugbear and publisher Namco promise a more aggressive, dangerous, open-world racing game that “breaks free from all the pussyfooting around tame circuits, politely bumping into rivals' fenders.” Set in the fictional Shatter Bay, players will have to fight their way to top of the food chain by smashing through the environment, and opponents. “Traditional racing machines are out, badass street machines are in,” claims the hyperbolic announcement.

Bugbear Entertainment came to prominence in 2004 with the PC release of FlatOut, one of the first physics-led racers on the market, long before Motorstorm was gaining plaudits on the Playstation 3. And if the CG trailer is anything to go by, Bugbear will leverage that knowledge of physics to create a unique racer filled with destructible environments, in addition to the car and driver deformation first seen in FlatOut.
